For GQâs April cover, Pharrell sits down with writer Zach Baron about politics (heâs says Hillary will take it all!), the Tea Party, twerking, race, that much-discussed hat-collection, and losing the Best Song Oscar.
Here are the highlights from the interview:
On the Oscar snub:
“Well, trust me: when they read the results, my face wasâŠfrozen. But then I thought about it, and I just decided just toâŠlet it go.”
On the criticism his album cover for G I R L received :
“Itâs insecurity. You can be anything that you want to be, and what I chose to do is put my friends on the cover. The girl that was closest next to me is black, but they didnât know that, so they jumped the gun. And itâs like: ‘Yo, you donât need nobody to represent you. You represent you. You represent the best version of who you could be. You go out there and change the world.’ Because Iâm black, and I wouldnât trade my skin color for nothing. But I donât need to keep wearing a badge that tells you that Iâm black every time I do something! Iâm black! My motherâs black, whoâs a big part of my business; a black woman runs my business; and Iâm married to a black woman. What more do you want?”
“It doesnât make sense to me. That kind of divisiveness is not necessary at a time when weâre supposed to be unifying. Thatâs what happiness is all about, and if you look at my ‘Happy’ video, I had everybody in there: fat, skinny, gay, straight, purple, polka-dot, plaid, gingham print, houndstooth, alien. I fuckinâ had dogs in there! I had children in there! I had kids in there! Iâm the most indiscriminate person that there is! I believe in equality.”
“Black ainât a color: black is a spirit, and it is ubiquitous. In fact, thereâs more black out in space than there is stars. We have nothing to be insecure about.”
On Hilary Clinton being the next president:
“Let me tell you why Hillaryâs going to win. Everywhere you go in this country, you have red and blue. You got the Democrats; you got the Republicans. You got the Bloods; you got the Crips. You know what else is red and blue? Blood. Blood is blue in your body until air hits it, and then it turns red. That means thereâs unity. Thereâs gonna be unity. So when you think about a night where thereâs late-night talk-show hosts and itâs mostly women, thatâs a different world. Right? A world where 75 percent of the prime ministers and the presidents were women: thatâs a different world. Thatâs gonna happen, and itâs gonna happen when Hillary wins. Because you know what? No matter how staunch of a supporter you are of no-abortion, whatever you are: youâre a woman, and thereâs no way in the world youâre going to vote for somebody thatâs going to try to tell you what to do with your body. Hillaryâs gonna win. Listen, Iâm reaching out to her right now. Sheâs gonna win.”
On the Tea Party:
“The Tea Party guys? The guys with the n***er jokes in 2014? Theyâre all trying to learn how to do the Dougie. Please. While their daughters are all twerking. Trust me: Miley tells me all the time. Not saying that about Billy Ray, but Iâm saying Miley tells me all the time: all those little girls, all those girls with their Republican daddies, theyâre twerkinâ somewhere listening to Jay Z and BeyoncĂ© and doinâ the ‘Happy’ dance. And thatâs black.”
On being misunderstood:
“Iâm not a renaissance man. What I am is a maverick, and I donât want to be put in a box at all.”
On when he moved out of his parents house:
“Uh, when I finally got tired of sneaking girls in. And it was more than one girl, you know, coming to hang out with me. So it was kind of likeâyou know, I didnât want to do that to my mom.”
On his infamous buffalo hat (which he previously explained was a salute to the Buffalo Soldiers):
“Anything different, people are going to look at and go, ‘Ha ha ha ha, what is that??’ Then, after a while, they do a little bit of research; they realize itâs Vivienne Westwood, an ode to her boyfriend at the time; they had a store together called Worldâs End. The guy who went on to sign the Sex Pistols, Malcolm McLaren.”

So sad indeed that VH1 has decided not to give us a season 4 of “Single Ladies” Â It doesn’t really come as much of a shock since I couldn’t get into the show this season for some reason. Â Something was missing, and apparently VH1 thought so as well. Â Here’s a statement released from VH1:
âWeâve been proud to deliver three seasons of the drama, romance and style that engaged viewers in each episode of Single Ladies,â VH1 said in a statement to Deadline. âAlthough weâve decided not to move forward with another season, we hope to work again with the talented cast, creatives and producers as well as our partners at Flavor Unit Entertainment in the near future. We also thank the showâs fans for their support since the premiere in 2011.â
Comedic drama series Single Ladies started off as a movie before becoming VH1âČs first hourlong scripted series. Its success opened the door to Hit The Floor, which became a breakout hit in its launch last summer, and drama Hindsight, which was just picked up to series. There were bumps on the road. Shortly after VH1 renewed Single Ladies for a third season in August 2012, creator/executive producer Stacy A. Littlejohn exited the project. Season 3 didnât launch until this January, a year and a half after it was ordered. Still, Single Ladies is leaving on a high note. Its third season opener drew 2.6 million viewers. For the premiere airing and its same night encore combined, Single Ladies grew each seasons:, posting 2.9 for the season premiere, 3.2 million for the Season 2 opener and 3.5 million for Season 3. Also cancelled is VH1âČs sketch comedy series Stevie TVstarring Stevie Ryan. It ran for two seasons, ending its run in July 2013.
Hey, it happens! Â Guess these “Single Ladies” will be on the job hunt searching for a new project.
