WHO WAS HAZEL SCOTT?

OCTOBER 15, 2009

She was called the “Darling of Café Society” back in 1939 when New York City was alive with the sounds of swing.

A sexy siren sitting bare-shouldered at the piano, Hazel Scott captivated audiences with her renditions of classical masterpieces by Chopin, Bach and Rachmaninoff. Nightly, crowds would gather at Café Society, New York’s first fully integrated nightclub, the epicenter of jazz and politics nestled in Greenwich Village, to hear the nineteen-year-old bronze beauty transform “Valse in D-Flat Major”, “Two Part Invention in A-Minor,” and “Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2” into highly syncopated sensations.

“But where others murder the classics, Hazel Scott merely commits arson,” wrote TIME magazine. “Strange notes creep in, the melody is tortured with hints of boogie-woogie, until finally, happily, Hazel Scott surrenders to her worse nature and beats the keyboard into a rack of bones.”

Born in Port of Spain, Trinidad on June 11, 1920, Hazel Dorothy Scott was the only child of R. Thomas Scott, a West African scholar from Liverpool, England and Alma Long Scott, a classically-trained pianist and music teacher.

A precocious child who discovered the piano at the age of 3, Hazel surprised everyone with her ability to play by ear. When she would scream with displeasure after one of Alma’s students hit a wrong note, no one in the household recognized the sensitive ear she possessed.

“They had been amused, but no one regarded my urge as latent talent,” she recalled. Until one day, young Hazel made her way to the piano and began tapping out the church hymn, “Gentle Jesus”, a tune her grandmother Margaret sang to her daily at nap time.

From that moment on, Alma shifted her focus from her own dreams of becoming a concert pianist, and dedicated herself to cultivating her daughter’s natural gift. They were a tight knit pair, sharing an extremely close bond throughout their lives. “She was the single biggest influence in my life,” Hazel said.

Her father, on the other hand, would soon leave the family and have a very small presence in his daughter’s life.

Following the breakup of the Scott’s marriage, the three of them—mother, daughter and grandmother—would migrate to the States in search of greater opportunity for themselves and the gifted young pianist. In 1924, they headed to New York and landed in Harlem, where Alma took a job as a domestic maid.

She struggled, however, and returned to what she knew best—music. She taught herself the saxophone, and eventually joined Lil Hardin Armstrong’s orchestra in the early 1930s.

Alma’s associations with well-known musicians made the Scott household “a mecca for musicians,” according to Hazel, who benefited from the guidance and tutelage of jazz greats Art Tatum, Lester Young and Fats Waller, all of whom she considered to be like family.

In 1928, Hazel auditioned for enrollment in the prestigious Juilliard School of Music. She was only eight-years-old, and too young for standard enrollment (students had to be at least 16), but because of some influential nudging by wealthy family friends and Alma’s sheer determination, Hazel was given a chance.

Her performance of Rachmaninoff’s “Prelude in C-Sharp Minor” made a strong impression on staff professor Oscar Wagner. He proclaimed the child “a genius,” and with the permission of the school’s director, Walter Damrosch, offered her a special scholarship where he would teach her privately.

Career progress was swift. A spirited young woman with an outward demeanor that was effervescent and engaging, Hazel’s life was not that of an ordinary teenager. While still in high school, Hazel hosted her own radio show on WOR after winning a local competition, and performed gigs at night.

At times, she felt burdened by the demands of her talent, admitting, “There were times when I thought that I just couldn’t go on.”

Still, she managed to graduate with honors from Wadleigh High. Not long after, she made her Broadway debut in the musical revue Sing Out the News.

Commercial recordings of her ”Bach to Boogie” repertoire on the Signature and Decca labels would break sales records nationwide. There was little separation between Hazel’s performance and her outspoken politics.

She attributed it to being raised by very proud, strong-willed, independent-minded women. She was one of the first black entertainers to refuse to play before segregated audiences.Written in all her contracts was a standing clause that required forfeiture if there was a dividing line between the races. “Why would anyone come to hear me, a Negro, and refuse to sit beside someone just like me?,” she asked.

By the time Hollywood came calling, Hazel had achieved such stature that she could successfully challenge the studios’ treatment of black actors, demanding pay commensurate with her white counterparts, and refusing to play the subservient roles in which black actors were commonly cast.

She would wear no maid uniforms or washer woman rags, and insisted that her name credit appear the same in all films: “Hazel Scott as Herself.” She performed in five major motion pictures in the early ‘40s, including I Dood It, directed by Vincente Minelli and featuring Lena Horne and the Gershwin biopic Rhapsody in Blue.

But it was the on set of The Heat’s On starring Mae West that Hazel’s characteristic brashness was unleashed. In a scene where she played a WAC sergeant during WWII, Hazel was angered by the costumes the black actresses were given to wear.

She complained that “no woman would see her sweetheart off to war wearing a dirty apron.”

Hazel promptly staged a strike that went on for three days, a battle that was finally rectified by removing the aprons from the scene altogether.

The incident came at the cost of Hazel’s film career, which was short-lived as result of her defiance. “I’ve been brash all my life, and it’s gotten me into a lot of trouble.

But at the same time, speaking out has sustained me and given meaning to my life,” she said.

It was during these peak years of her career that Hazel began a romantic affair with the controversial Harlem preacher/politician, Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. who was making a bid for the U.S Congress.

Twelve years her senior, married, and a reputed womanizer, Powell pursued her unabashedly. At first, she was annoyed by his advances, but eventually irritation gave way to real interest and passion.

The couple began seeing each other in secret. Amidst a great deal of scandal, the couple married in August of 1945; she was the grande vedette of Café Society and he was the first black congressman from the East Coast. “They were stars, not only in the black world but the white world. That was extraordinary,” commented journalist Mike Wallace at the time.

MISSIONARY RAPIST FROM OKLAHOMA GETS 40 YEARS IN PRISON FOR ABUSING ORPHANS IN AFRICA

Published March 8, 2016 by sheezacoldpiece

An Oklahoma missionary who volunteered at a children’s home in Kenya was sentenced to 40 years in prison Monday for sexually assaulting three girls and a boy while working at the facility, according to court documents.
Matthew Lane Durham, 21, was sentenced to four decades in prison by Judge David L. Russell on four counts of “engaging in illicit sexual conduct in foreign places,” according to court documents.
“In a span of just 33 days,” prosecutors wrote to the court, Durham “raped three girls — ages 5, 9 and 15 — at least eight times. During that same time period, he sexually molested a 12-year-old boy twice.”
The prosecutors said that Durham “not only forcefully sexually abused these children,” but “he psychologically damaged them by taking advantage of their trust he received from the children.”
A jury found Durham guilty on seven counts of the charge in June, court records show. Russell acquitted Durham on three of the counts in January, writing that the prosecutors “failed to establish that he engaged in a ‘sexual act’ ” with the children identified in those charges.
Durham’s attorney, Stephen Jones, told CNN on Monday that he plans to appeal the court’s decision.
Fallout in Kenya
The region of the eastern African nation that Durham volunteered in has also been shaken, prosecutors say.
In a sentencing memorandum to the court in February, they wrote that Durham’s actions “have had a chilling effect on the lives of dozens of foreign volunteers in Kenya and elsewhere who must now live under the cloud of suspicion … there is a real perception among Upendo’s local Kenyan community that more pedophiles lurk among the volunteers, especially the male volunteers.”

In 2014, Durham arrived at Upendo Children’s Centre to volunteer with neglected children, according to the criminal complaint. Durham had previously volunteered at the school three times before.
The organization, funded by an American citizen, recruits volunteers from the Oklahoma church community and provides food, housing and clothes to neglected children in Nairobi, according to the complaint.
Upon arriving in 2014, Durham requested to stay at an “overflow bunk” in the school rather than an off-site facilities with sponsor families to be in a “better position to assist the children,” the complaint says.
A school caretaker began to notice odd behavior between Durham and the children, including “lingering embraces” and “lying beside some of the children on their beds” at night, the complaint says.
Durham was confronted by leaders at the school who then held his passport, the complaint says. They returned the passport to him days later, and he flew back to Oklahoma.
At the time of his arrest, Durham’s attorney told CNN that Durham was coerced into a confession to get his passport back.

This has me so infuriated to no end.  This man went over to Africa just to rape and abuse helpless children.  He should be put away for life!!!  Children’s lives are more serious and precious than any drug offender behinds bars for life.  This is what is wrong with our justice system.  He never should see the light of day again in his lifetime.

Phone Number 229-787-5765

149 E Walton St, Baconton, GA 31716-7705

At the corner on East Walton Street in Baconton sits a small brick building. But it’s not just any building, it’s the first black owned pharmacy and a ribbon cutting was held Monday morning to celebrate its opening.

Dr. Teresa Mitchell, owner of Total Care Pharmacy, says this is an exciting opportunity for her. “I’m very excited to be a leader and entrepreneur in the area,” said Mitchell.

No stranger to Baconton, Dr. Mitchell has been a practicing pharmacist for over 20 years and she’s also from Mitchell County. Recently she taught the pharmacy technician program at Albany Technical College. Being an entrepreneur is something Mitchell has dreamed about for a while.

“We started back in September 2014, and for me I would say that it was a God move,” Mitchell said. “As far as the area, it was a seed that my father planted before he passed. He told me that if I ever wanted to start a business, to start it in Baconton because it was the hub, it was the center, it was going to grow.”

If you’re in the area and need you meds, go support this historic pharmacy.  For all, by us.  Congrats Dr. Mitchell!

5 YEAR OLD SON OF ALICIA KEYS & SWIZZ BEATZ – EGYPT PRODUCED A TRACK FOR KENDRICK LAMAR

Published March 4, 2016 by sheezacoldpiece

It’s all in those genes.  This amazing 5 year boy, Egypt Dean, produced a track on Kendrick Lamar’s new album “Untitled- Unmastered” that dropped yesterday for the masses.  Swizz Beatz (Kaseem Dean) is a well known producer in the rap industry, having made hits for EVE, Jay-Z, DMX, and many more, has his son with songstress Alicia Keys, following in his footsteps.

He posted the following proud papa message on Instagram last night, praising his son and thanking Kendrick Lamar for allowing his son “the youth” to produce the track- which he did with no help from anyone.

What a special gifted young man, who has made history I’m sure as the youngest producer with major industry credit.  These other young celebrity kids need to step their game up quick…lol. Congrats to young Egypt making history and headlines at 5.

YOUNG BLACK TEEN PUSHED, SHOVED, AND TAUNTED OUT OF DONALD TRUMP RALLY BY WHITE SUPREMACIST

Published March 2, 2016 by sheezacoldpiece

On Monday, 30 black students attending a Donald Trump rally at Valdosta State University in rural Georgia were forcefully ejected — simply for being black.
On Tuesday, in Louisville, Ky., what happened to young black protesters at another Trump rally wasn’t just racist — it appears to be outright criminal.

While we have already widely reported that white supremacists are openly proclaiming that they are fully emboldened and energized by Trump, the natural progression of their romance with Trump is now on full display.

While Trump was giving his typical campaign speech about making America great again, several different predominantly black groups of protesters, who were simply there to hold up signs, began having those signs snatched and getting cursed by the white Trump supporters surrounding them.

We now know that those Trump supporters are open bigots, Neo-Nazis, and white supremacists belonging to many different groups including the Traditionalist Worker Party — a well-documented hate group. Their social media profiles are full of Nazi photos, KKK and white supremacist references, and some of the most insulting, despicable hate speech you’ll ever see.

One of their leaders, Matthew Heimbach, tweeted that youth workers from the Traditionalist Worker Party were responsible for snatching the signs.

It is believed that Heimbach, one of the best known youth leaders of modern white supremacy and Neo-Nazism in the country, may be the man who can be seen in the red “Make America Great Again hat” who repeatedly shoved, pushed and screamed profanities at the teenage girl in the video. He has actually been banned from entering the United Kingdom because of his bigotry.

Before the rally began, he was seen by another protester wearing the same Traditionalist Worker Party T-shirt and eyeglasses he was seen with while assaulting the young girl. Heimbach can also be seen wearing the same shirt and glasses in photos throughout his social media profiles.

In fact, men and women can been seen wearing those T-shirts throughout the rally. For them, it appears, a Trump rally is a white power rally.
When I first saw the short 37-second news clip of this young girl being forcefully pushed and shoved by large grown men, my blood began to boil. In my lifetime, I have never seen grown men, many who at first appeared to be complete strangers, violently shove a young girl around like that. Some seem to just be pushing her for fun to the left and to the right, just because it’s what other people were doing.

While it all goes down, the hate for her is visible in the eyes not just of the adult men who repeatedly shove her, but in the surrounding women who look on. Nobody, not a single soul, offers to help protect her or escort her out in a way that is remotely safe.
Nobody, though, was as violent and flagrant as the man in the Trump campaign hat with the white supremacist T-shirt. As he yells in the young girls face, and appears to attempt to stab her with a pen of some sort, he pushes and shoves her repeatedly.

n—– and a c–t and got kicked out,” said Shiya Nwanguma, a respected student at the University of Louisville to a local interviewerin a video posted on Facebook.
“They were pushing and shoving at me, cursing at me, yelling at me, called me every name in the book. They were disgusting and dangerous.”

If this was a mob of black men harassing a young white female teenager, it would be all over prime time news.  This is a clear reminder of where we are as a Country, and the amount of hate and bigotry that still exists.  It’s sickening.

OSCARS SO WHITE AND CHRIS ROCK…

Published February 28, 2016 by sheezacoldpiece

The Oscars are over and the highlight of the night was…..Leonardo DiCaprio finally won an Oscar for his role in The Revenant.  As for Chris Rock as host, some will say he did a FANTASTIC job with his humor and candor…while others would reduce him to Coon of the year.  I didn’t watch Oscars, I only saw clips, but from what I saw, I wasn’t too proud.  Him making a mockery of black people would absolutely go over as a success to the Oscar audience.  He poked fun at Jada Pinkett Smith for saying she was boycotting the Oscars and said it was like “him boycotting Rihanna’s panties…he wasn’t invited”.  He interviewed a woman from (a black woman) who many would call ghetto with purplish hair, and a lighter in her hand to match, about the people who won deserving it.

Then there was Stacey Dash, and her “Happy Black History Month” comment followed by a very awkward silence…more like crickets.

Yep, her face says it all about Stacey and the fact they had the nerve to put her ass up there to say that.  A true slap in the face to black folks.  Oh…but he did end the night with #BlackLivesMatter so 🙄. Thanks Chris.  I guess.
